Entries for August 2007

I love the new control on the iPhone for settings. It basically could replace a checkbox or a yes/no|on/off radio button. I would love to build something similar to use in my flex applications. The great part is that it has a much larger hit area. Even with a label on a checkbox or radio button, you still have a fairly small area that you can click on to invoke the control. Plus, this us much easier to see and read and know what state the control is in. Below is an example of what I am talking about for the uninitiated: Unfortunately, I don't have a clue how to even get started building something like this in flex, even though I am certain it could be done. My thought is that you could make it customizable, make it have two colors for the background of the different setting labels, one for the "on" state and on for the "off" state. You could even customize the words used for the on and off state. It could broadcast events when its state was changed and have a sliding transition for when the state changed too. I would love to eventually see this sort of thing in an html control too, even if it used javascript. What do you think? Do you like the control and how it works? Do you think it would be a good replacement for a checkbox in at least some situations?

Or, Pie Charts 2.0. Anil Dash on Pixel maps instead of pie charts to convey the same information. I love it; see here: http://www.dashes.com/anil/2007/07/pixels-are-the-new-pies.html Now, who wants to be the first to write a flex component that does this?
